The M-72 motorcycle was developed in the USSR by adapting the German BMW R71 for domestic production in 1941. Mass production began at the Moscow Motorbike Factory (MZMA) and the 'Krasny Oktyabr' plant in Leningrad, later expanding to Irbit from February 1942. Intended solely for military use, the M-72 featured ammunition pouches and mounts for the Degtyaryov DP machine gun. Some units also received variants equipped with an 82mm mortar instead of the sidecar, enhancing the mobility of mortar units.
